我将用许多实例来说明它们的用法和含义。

常去我的英语博客的博友可能已经发现，我常常把对同一或类似事件的报道文章收集整理到一起。有些大学生说英语写作难，不知如何开篇，不知如何构成段落，也不会写复合句，更谈不上写出像样的文章了。脑子里有货，用英语倒不出来。等等。英语老师为他们改作文真是伤透了脑筋！如果老师整天泡在批改这些充满错误的英语作文里，那么，老师的英语水平都可能受到影响呢！“常在河边走，哪有不湿鞋”。这句话也适用于这种批改错误英语的情形。其实，答案、范例就在我们眼皮底下，就看我们用不用心。下面举一些发布在我英语博客里的文章的实例来看看这些文章都是如何写的。本文在这个问题上先在此粗略谈谈，后面会专门在研讨英语写作的各类文体时撰文细细研究。范例如下：

其他对比实例：

这个问题提炼出来就是： 过去分词放在其所修饰的名词的前面或后面，在含义上有无区别或差异的问题。即： babies orphaned 和 orphaned babies 含义完全相同吗？

学英语语法是我们中国人的强项，讲起语法来可谓头头是道，可说写起英语来还是常常出错！原因何在？ 纵观国内英语教学，讲解词语是掰开来， 揉过去，用中文讲解几个英语词句，举几个例子，中文占用的篇幅比英语的几个例句还多。管用吗？ 各位学习英语者扪心自问一下。中国传统的英语教学的问题还有：学生在英语环境中听说读写译的英语实践的量和深度不够。首先，小学、中学的英语老师本身达不到用英语直接教学的水平，学生当然也听不懂英语。

上面这个问题并非可以简单地以“可以”或“不可以”来回答的。在某种情形下可以，在另一种情形下可能就不合适。有些是明显的差异， 有些只有微妙的区别，有时又完全可以互换。视具体情况而定。

Interestingly enough, the most successful writer of romantic fiction is a retired male motorcop. Put the motorcop aside for the moment and let’s take a brief tour of the history of women police officers as writers.

Women in Policing

There is some disagreement about who should be thought of as the first women police officer in the United States.  In 1910, Alice Stebbin Wells joined the Los Angeles Police Department and was the first woman to be called a “Policewoman.” Although who was first is open to debate, the types of function that early women police officers performed were fairly similar.

大家一定要根据上面每段示例中所附链接去我的英语博客（洋妹妹）阅读全部原文，要从整个原文的语言环境中体会这些词语的用法。

从以上实例中我们看到，policewoman， woman police， female police，copwoman， woman cop 或 female cop 这些说法都是存在的。除此而外，我们还见识到了“警察”一词在英语里的不同说法。这些可都是有讲究的。比如， police officer 和 constable、 Sheriff 都指警察，它们是有点不同的；另外， 我们在美国还常见到开着警车的另一种警察， 叫做trooper。 我们在美国的某些地区比如山区、沙漠地区（如美国和墨西哥接壤的边境地带）还看见另一种警察， 叫做ranger. 这些称谓在美国电影里可以听到。

野老虎在美国多年， 吃过几次超速的罚单，即ticket， 这可不是进电影院看电影的门票。给我超速罚单的警察有两类， 一类是sheriff, 另一类是trooper。

人们知道， cop 也指“警察”，但这是俚语的用法。 我们从上面的实例中看到， 俚语常常出现在新闻报道中。

在国内学习和使用英语的环境和英语国家的环境比差别还是比较大的。比如，我上面提到的一些词语，在国内只能在书中或网上见到（如果阅读广泛的话），但是我们在美国却完全可以感受得到，摸得着。他们警察每日就在我们的眼前“晃悠”。说真的， 喜欢警察的人真不多。

在国内， 我们也有把警察叫做“雷子”的，可能是来自陕西一带的方言吧。也有把警察叫做“条子”的，贬义。也听到“片警”的说法， 通常指在一定管辖区域内负责的警察。在国内可能这类警察都是属于派出所的。可能在各省市还有更多不同的说法。很显然， 警察虽然有不同的称谓， 但并非在任何场合情形下都可通用互换。假如北京市召开警察大会。领导在台上宣布名单：“本市共评选出先进‘雷子’120人。处分犯错误‘条子’5人”， 合适吗？

英语里“警察”的各类称谓还不止这些。 英国也有警察一词的俚语。

还是先谈谈在以上段落中出现的各类用法吧（注意我标有加重深色的地方）：

本篇以我英语博客里的文章段落为例，示范如何细致地学习英语的词汇、句式和文章，以点带面，扩展拓宽学习范围。不妨先以近期发布的一篇文章的前两段为例（就在本页面内）。划底线或加重的地方为阅读时要留心的地方。

为照顾一些语法知识基础薄弱的博友，我讲细一点。

先讲句子结构。我们不妨把一个复合句比作一颗大树，有树干、树枝和树叶。

句子的最根本的结构其实很简单：主语+谓语+（宾语）；宾语是对及物动词而言的。所有的句子无论有多复杂，都包含这样的基本结构。有时会有部分的省略；也有“颠三倒四”的情况，比如倒装句即其中一种情形，这是为了表达上的需要。树干=主语+谓语+（宾语）；其他的各种成分如状语（或状语从句）、定语（或定语从句）、同位语（或同位语从句）、插入语等等都算做是枝枝叶叶----他们或在句前，或句后，或插在句子中的什么位置，严格讲是按语法规则，但要遵从约定成熟的习惯。语法家奋斗了一辈子，总结出了许多规则。其实这些语法规则都是他们从历史上语言的演变和发展规律中总结而非杜撰出来的。首先存在语言现象，口语在先，后有书面语。我们学习英语，不仅仅是要学习现成的规则，也要自己动脑筋发现和研究语言规律。自己总结出来的，再学习并结合他人的成果， 肯定忘不掉！来试试上面的句子，分成几个步骤：

（一）砍掉剥去枝枝叶叶，露出树干（主谓宾）。枝枝叶叶的特征是：含有形容词、副词、介词或由这些组成的所谓短语，如介词短语，分词短语，动名词短语，还有定语从句、状语从句，等等，总之是起修饰、补充等作用的部分。枝枝叶叶不就是树的陪衬嘛！另外，熟悉词性是很重要的，否则写作上会错误百出。除了记忆词性，还要具备一定的知识能够在句子中推断出不认识的新词的词性来。句子分析尤其是对付很长的复合句是一种基本技能，也可称之为“肢解”句子。

该段话的主干（主谓宾）是：

A policewoman has been given a job. （这是个现在完成时的被动语态）

枝枝叶叶有：

（1）形容词：Chinese、better、good；副词：merely；还有名词等。

（2）限制性定语从句：who breastfed babies orphaned during last month's earthquake，修饰policewoman；其中，orphaned during last month's earthquake 可看作是过去分词短语做后置定语修饰babies；也可把orphaned单独看成是过去分词做后置定语修饰babies，把during last month's earthquake看作是状语；

（3）prompting online protests that promotions should be awarded on merit, not merely for good deeds.

对这部分做什么成分可有两种解释，都说得通：

(a)现在分词短语做原因状语：“prompting online protests”的原因是 “A policewoman has been given a better job”。 这里隐含有因果关系， 没有女警察之提升，就不会引发网上抗议。也可把“prompting online protests”理解为对主干句的补充。

（b）现在分词短语做非限制性定语，由逗号隔开，因此可用非限制性定语从句替换，即：

而“prompting online protests that promotions should be awarded on merit, not merely for good deeds.”本身还含有一个由that 引导的定语从句（划线的部分），修饰

protests；Which 就是指代其前半部分主句。从句，顾名思义，从属于主句，所以它的作用是修饰或补充主句的。主句就是主干。【注：如果单独看prompting online protests， 可看作动名词短语，protests是 prompting的宾语，oneline 是修饰protests的，做定语。】

现在看清楚了：大树干（主句）上的树枝是从句，树枝上的小树枝是短语，小树枝上的叶子是单词。理解复杂的复合句时，先假定去掉这些枝枝叶叶，露出树干，这就是主体句子，是核心，是重心。其它统统是陪衬的，即所谓修饰。反过来，一个大树干（主句）成型后，把枝枝叶叶加上去，合理地安排其不同的位置，就变成了枝繁叶茂的大树的整体（复合句）。【注：为了方便，枝枝叶叶没有加双引号，即：“枝枝叶叶”】

（二）现在来研究一下标题： China cop promoted for breastfeeding quake babies

可以把 promoted for breastfeeding quake babies 理解成过去分词短语做后置定语，修饰 China cop；也可理解成省略了系动词be。即：China cop is promoted for breastfeeding quake babies,而实际上原本正是这样的一个完整的句子。但是在标题中， 多会省略一部分。注意这里用了is，一般现在时常用于新闻标题中（尽管事件是过去发生的）。又如本文下面一段的标题：Space shuttle Discovery blasts off 。在电影解说、剧情场景描述、图片说明等方面也常见到用一般现在时的情况。只要去英语博客里看看就很清楚了！今天先不谈这个问题。

for在这里表示原因， 此用法很常见。如：Thank you for your advice; Excuse me for being late; He was praised for helping others, 等等。

breastfeeding quake babies 是动名词短语，一般认为是做介词for的宾语，而babies 做breastfeeding 宾语；

动名词（Gerunds）和现在分词（Present Participles）都是动词的ing形式， 即 doing。问题在于动名词和现在分词的划分或区别，语法界有一定争议，都说得通。会用才是主要的。

记住最关键特性：

动名词，顾名思义，兼有名词和动词的特性；现在分词兼有形容词和动词的特性，过去分词(Past Participles)也如此，即：

Gerunds differ from participles in one fundamental respect: Gerunds are verb forms used as nouns; Participles are verb forms used as adjective.

The gerund is both verb and noun; The participle is both verb and adjective.

（三）现在开始研究句中的词汇（注意加重的单词）。词汇学习尤其是动词是我系列文章里要谈的重点。我要特别强调必须在语言环境中学习词汇及其他。将引用大量的实例来说明为什么词汇学习绝不能孤立于语言环境之外。仅参考词典里的几个例句是绝对不够的，我们要从一篇篇文章下手来系统、细致地学习词汇。学习时态、语态也如此，且必然要涉及到词汇。这是大环境的问题。大家看到，仅仅是第一段里，我就划出了不少重点词汇。其实每个词都是可以说上几大篇的。我们来看看这些词汇到底都有哪些名堂！

（1）先翻成中文（仅供参考以方便讲解；待斟酌）

直译：在上月地震期间给数名孤儿哺乳的中国女警察获得了一份更好的工作，从而引发了网上抗议：擢升应按照功绩而不是只看所做的好事。

改译：一位中国女警察在上月地震期间给数名孤儿哺乳而获得了提拔，引发了网上抗议：应该按照功绩提拔而非只看善行（或：不应只看善行而要以功绩为标准）。

这里，breastfeed没有译为“喂奶”，因为用奶瓶喂奶也是喂奶，而该英文词的含义是哺乳；译成“数名孤儿”是因为babies这个词是个复数形式。这个事迹众人皆知，但翻译是假定给不知情的人看的。在上下文通晓的情况下， 可省略“数名”；翻译不是本篇要谈的。

现在提出问题：

（1）这里的policewoman， 可以说成 woman police 吗？ 可以说成 female police 吗？ 或copwoman? 或woman cop ? 或female cop？ ------我将用实例来说明。

（2）deed 一词可以用 behavior,performance, conduct, act 等来替换吗？-----将以大量实例来说明。

（3）如果把“A Chinese policewoman who breastfed babies orphaned during last month's earthquake。。。”改写为“A Chinese policewoman who breastfed orphaned babies during last month's earthquake。。。”有区别吗？

（4）其他对比：两篇文章的开头

除海外英语媒体外，还要充分利用好国内的英语广播电台和电视台的英语节目如CCTV-9；利用好国内的英文报刊如：中国日报； 上海日报（英文），中国经济日报（英语），新华社（英文），人民日报（英文），等等。中国独有的文化、政治、经济等方面的英语词汇在国外的报刊里不是很常见。如果在国内从事翻译工作，它们是不可或缺的部分。我也经常阅读国内的英文报刊。

如何攻下词汇关

在大量阅读中学习和掌握英语词汇  单词记住了不会使用等于零

掌握英语字根，构词法，事半功倍

细致阅读 反复阅读 重读名作（名著），做好笔记

用学会的词语和句式写文章  从模仿写作到摆脱模仿而写作

为什么要反复朗读文章、 复述和背诵？ 反复、重复才能记得牢靠

精读新文章之前：快速朗读，看读完后能懂多少； 再慢朗读，注意词义和句式句型的细节， 看看读完后又懂了多少； 在老师讲解课文前自己先不看单词表而直接用快速朗读、慢读，再多次反复朗读的办法测试自己能够理解多少；自己预习新课文；课文后用英语写成的练习题也要朗读，语法书中的例句也要反复朗读；要达到在做选择填空题时读到填空位置时不看选择答案自己即可马上说出正确答案。

听说读写译都不可缺。 但是在学习过程中把什么都要转换翻译成中文的学习方法对学好地道的英语没有多大帮助，反而有一定副作用。如果使用英语在国内的环境里需要中英互译，那么这种方法是可行的。在海外与英语为母语的人士交流必须要直接输入、直接输出，而非通过中文的转换。

在中国地震期间， 我连续发布了许多篇英语报道和评述，几乎全部来自英美的报刊。假如学习英语的博友们坚持把它们都阅读完，都研习过里面的词句表达方式和写作手法，反复自我操练，那么这地震一个月期间，学习英语的收获又该有多大呢？我了解国内的地震情况或信息，大概95%以上是通过阅读英语新闻，发布到英语博客的只是极少数部分，而我阅读的文章远远超过了发布到博客里的。我只在对西方的报道产生疑问时，才去国内的中文或英文网站核对。

忍痛减少在博客里“访亲问友”、“问寒问暖”的时间， 把有限的时间用于强化提高英语。利用好青春年华，早日突破学习英语的“瓶颈”，为将来铺路
