<p><font size="4">常去我的英语博客的博友可能已经发现，我常常把对同一或类似事件的报道文章收集整理到一起。有些大学生说英语写作难，不知如何开篇，不知如何构成段落，也不会写复合句，更谈不上写出像样的文章了。脑子里有货，用英语倒不出来。等等。英语老师为他们改作文真是伤透了脑筋！如果老师整天泡在批改这些充满错误的英语作文里，那么，老师的英语水平都可能受到影响呢！&ldquo;常在河边走，哪有不湿鞋&rdquo;。这句话也适用于这种批改错误英语的情形。其实，答案、范例就在我们眼皮底下，就看我们用不用心。下面举一些发布在我英语博客里的文章的实例来看看这些文章都是如何写的。本文在这个问题上先在此粗略谈谈，后面会专门在研讨英语写作的各类文体时撰文细细研究。范例如下： </font></p>

<p><font size="4">这个问题提炼出来就是： 过去分词放在其所修饰的名词的前面或后面，在含义上有无区别或差异的问题。即： babies orphaned 和 orphaned babies 含义完全相同吗？</font></p>
<p><font size="4">学英语语法是我们中国人的强项，讲起语法来可谓头头是道，可说写起英语来还是常常出错！原因何在？ 纵观国内英语教学，讲解词语是掰开来， 揉过去，用中文讲解几个英语词句，举几个例子，中文占用的篇幅比英语的几个例句还多。管用吗？ 各位学习英语者扪心自问一下。中国传统的英语教学的问题还有：学生在英语环境中听说读写译的英语实践的量和深度不够。首先，小学、中学的英语老师本身达不到用英语直接教学的水平，学生当然也听不懂英语。</font></p>
<p><font size="4">上面这个问题并非可以简单地以&ldquo;可以&rdquo;或&ldquo;不可以&rdquo;来回答的。在某种情形下可以，在另一种情形下可能就不合适。有些是明显的差异， 有些只有微妙的区别，有时又完全可以互换。视具体情况而定。</font></p>

<p>我们中国人从一组英语近义词中选择出合适的感到比较困难，其实对说英语母语的人而言也同样存在一定的困难，但我们往往更缺乏通过语言实践而培养出的语感。这时我们感到仅靠语法不灵了。产生中式英语的原因是多方面的。其中，在学习英语中由于学习了大量的用中文讲解的英语，学习者同时要记住中英两种语言的含义，而一般而言，我们更容易记住词语和句子的中文释义。问题就出在这儿！比如，我们记住的上述五个词各自的中文含义可能是：deed,行为；behavior,举止；performance,表演； conduct,引导； act，行动。而该段落中的good deeds的中文含义可以表述为：（所做的）好事，善行，善举，好的举动，好的行为，等。按照我们中文的思维习惯，我们可能挨个去试上述的几个中文含义，看哪个更合适于deeds 的含义。因此，我们觉得似乎behavior更合适。（顺便提一下，deed 一词还有个重要的商业上的含义，在房地产交易中频繁使用。这个含义留待我在系列文章中谈论英语文体中的法律英语时再细谈）。</p>
<p>但是，deed,&nbsp;behavior,performance, conduct, act 都有中文里的&ldquo;行为&rdquo;的意思。当它们和good 连用时，也有了&ldquo;好的行为&rdquo;之意。这是这五个词本身具有许多含义中的其中交集的部分。其实，近义词的说法更准确。含有&ldquo;行为&rdquo;之意的英语词还有不少。当我们又知道它们都含有中文里的&ldquo;行为&rdquo;的含义时，就可能以为它们都可以完全替代&ldquo;good deeds&rdquo;。有一定英语水平的人通常不会轻易如此，他们比较谨慎，会去查询各类词典到搞清楚为止。</p>
<p>初学者往往按中文的含义去理解和掌握英语的词汇。应付国内那种考试是可行的，但绝对学不好英语。初学者还往往根据汉英词典查到的词语按照英语语法结构的&ldquo;合理性&rdquo;去套用，结果套用错了！这些词都有汉语里的&ldquo;行为&rdquo;的意思，但具体的涵义是不同的，它们之间即可以相互替换，又不可以相互替代，要视具体情况而定。</p>
<p>生长在英语国家里的人，从小接触地道的母语。他们开始读书学习时，每个词语都是用英语讲解的。他们的幼儿、小学、中学、大学教科书对英语的同一词语的解释由易到难、由浅入深，循序渐进地展开。我们中文的学习也如此。他们接受的是直接吸收、直接输出英语母语教育。</p>
<p>而我们中国人是在先掌握了中文母语的基础上开始学习英语的。学习的手段一开始就是用中文来辅助教学。我们讲解和操练大量的英语语法，分析句子结构，这个成分，又是那个成分的（就像我在&nbsp;2008-07-07&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://tigerhead06.blog.sohu.com/93931251.html" target="_blank">野老虎漫谈英语学习（系列之一）：细致学习 以点带面</a>&nbsp;里分析的那样），最后，我们花了很多精力仍然没有解决中式英语的问题。我们学习英语的传统教学方法不是直接用英语解释英语词汇，而是用中文来解释英语。既然英语和中文是两个不同的语种，洋人和中国人长得还不一样呢（尽管都有五脏六腑）， 又怎么可能在语言上都有完全对等完全相同的东西呢？对等的是有的。比如：中文里的铅笔，英语是pencil,名词容易找到对等的，铅笔摆在那儿，客观上就是那么个物体，中英两种不同叫法罢了。可是，不能完全对等的很多。比如英语的动词。还有形容词，如：great 一词， 我们从一开始就记住了&ldquo;伟大的&rdquo;这个含义，但后来我们发现英语里使用great 一词很频繁而广泛，用中文的&ldquo;伟大的&rdquo;一意去套用感到十分别扭。遗憾的是， 我在国内的中文媒体上常常见到一些文章动不动就把great翻译成&ldquo;伟大的&rdquo;。而且，国内中文媒体还动不动喜欢用&ldquo;惊呼&rdquo;。有篇中文报道说&ldquo;姚明疼得倒在地上抱住腿，惨叫声响彻丰田中心赛场里的每个角落！&rdquo;。可能吗？比赛现场的嘈杂声使得甚至近在一米内都听不清楚互相之间在说些什么。再举个例子：</p>
<p>我们学过good 和well， 知道它们的中文意思都是&ldquo;好的&rdquo;，前者为形容词， 后者为副词，也是形容词。举两个例子：</p>
<p>(a）You look good today</p>
<p>(b）You look well today</p>
<p>这两句的含义相同吗？ 如果按照中文的&ldquo;好的&rdquo;之意去套， 就会理解错误，误认为它们的含义相同！</p>
<p>事实上，(a)句中的good 是指&ldquo;好看、引人注目&rdquo;，而（b）句中的well 是指&ldquo;身体不错、气色不错&rdquo;。可见用中文来学习理解英语给我们带来了多大的困扰！</p>
<p>翻译，要完全达到忠于原文是几乎不可能的事情，只能相对而言，尽可能做到接近原文。难度在于， 语言本身还存在着双关语，习语、俚语，存在着话中话、讽刺挖苦的反语，等等。靠中文辅助来学习英语， 加上又是在国内中文的环境里学习英语， 怎么可能掌握全部地道的英语呢？ 我们只能加倍努力，和说母语的英语国家的人拉近距离。</p>
<p>我们中国人学习英语主要用于对外交流、把西方的英语作品介绍给国人， 或者把中国的介绍到外国。这就是翻译存在的必要性。但是，在英美等英语国家里和说英语母语的人交流， 中文便无用武之地了。在美国有些小地方，平日连个亚洲人的影子也见不到。在有些城市可以找到中餐馆，那种难吃的美式中餐， 让我不由得想起美式中文。</p>
<p>我们要考倒一位说着流利中文、写着顺畅中文的美国人或英国人是很容易的。随便拿个中国方言、土话、歇后语等就可让他们瞪白眼。同样，英语里的习语、俚语等也令我们苦不堪言。更何况美国英语和英国、加拿大、澳大利亚等地的英语也有不同之处。好在我们主要学习正规的常用的实用英语，不妨碍交流。</p>
<p>言归正传，继续通过英语文章来学习以上几个词的含义、用法和比较。我们通常是通过各类词典及词义辨析的书籍来了解近义词的比较含义的，而且这类国内的书籍绝大多数是用中文讲解的并附有一些英语例句。这些例句的真正的英语语言环境我们没有完全体验到， 我们是以类似的在中文环境中的以往体验通过想像来理解这些英语例句所存在的语言环境。这中间的客观情景、客观事物不变， 但语言载体变了。我们用中文这个语言载体来理解英语，出现了转换、丢失、偏差、偏离、曲解等现象。</p>

<p><font size="4">从以上实例中我们看到，policewoman， woman police， female police，copwoman， woman cop 或 female cop 这些说法都是存在的。除此而外，我们还见识到了&ldquo;警察&rdquo;一词在英语里的不同说法。这些可都是有讲究的。比如， police officer 和 constable、 Sheriff 都指警察，它们是有点不同的；另外， 我们在美国还常见到开着警车的另一种警察， 叫做trooper。 我们在美国的某些地区比如山区、沙漠地区（如美国和墨西哥接壤的边境地带）还看见另一种警察， 叫做ranger. 这些称谓在美国电影里可以听到。</font></p>

<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 13.5pt; COLOR: black">先讲句子结构。我们不妨把一个复合句比作一颗大树，有树干、树枝和树叶。</span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 13.5pt; COLOR: black">句子的最根本的结构其实很简单：</span><span style="FONT-SIZE: 13.5pt; COLOR: black">主语+谓语+（宾语）；宾语是对及物动词而言的。所有的句子无论有多复杂，都包含这样的基本结构。有时会有部分的省略；也有&ldquo;颠三倒四&rdquo;的情况，比如倒装句即其中一种情形，这是为了表达上的需要。树干=<span style="FONT-SIZE: 13.5pt; COLOR: black">主语+谓语+（宾语）；其他的各种成分如状语（或状语从句）、定语（或定语从句）、同位语（或同位语从句）、插入语等等都算做是枝枝叶叶----他们或在句前，或句后，或插在句子中的什么位置，严格讲是按语法规则，但要遵从约定成熟的习惯。语法家奋斗了一辈子，总结出了许多规则。其实这些语法规则都是他们从历史上语言的演变和发展规律中总结而非杜撰出来的。首先存在语言现象，口语在先，后有书面语。我们学习英语，不仅仅是要学习现成的规则，也要自己动脑筋发现和研究语言规律。自己总结出来的，再学习并结合他人的成果， 肯定忘不掉！来试试上面的句子，分成几个步骤：</span></span></p>
<p><span style="FONT-SIZE: 13.5pt; COLOR: black"><span style="FONT-SIZE: 13.5pt; COLOR: black">（一）砍掉剥去枝枝叶叶，露出树干（主谓宾）。枝枝叶叶的特征是：含有形容词、副词、介词或由这些组成的所谓短语，如介词短语，分词短语，动名词短语，还有定语从句、状语从句，等等，总之是起修饰、补充等作用的部分。枝枝叶叶不就是树的陪衬嘛！另外，熟悉词性是很重要的，否则写作上会错误百出。除了记忆词性，还要具备一定的知识能够在句子中推断出不认识的新词的词性来。句子分析尤其是对付很长的复合句是一种基本技能，也可称之为&ldquo;肢解&rdquo;句子。</span></span></p>

<p><font size="4">protests；Which 就是指代其前半部分主句。从句，顾名思义，从属于主句，所以它的作用是修饰或补充主句的。主句就是主干。【注：如果单独看prompting online protests， 可看作动名词短语，protests是 prompting的宾语，oneline 是修饰protests的，做定语。】</font></p>
<p><font size="4">现在看清楚了：大树干（主句）上的树枝是从句，树枝上的小树枝是短语，小树枝上的叶子是单词。理解复杂的复合句时，先假定去掉这些枝枝叶叶，露出树干，这就是主体句子，是核心，是重心。其它统统是陪衬的，即所谓修饰。反过来，一个大树干（主句）成型后，把枝枝叶叶加上去，合理地安排其不同的位置，就变成了枝繁叶茂的大树的整体（复合句）。【注：为了方便，枝枝叶叶没有加双引号，即：&ldquo;枝枝叶叶&rdquo;】</font></p>
<p><font size="4">（二）现在来研究一下标题：&nbsp;China <strong>cop</strong> promoted for <u>breastfeeding quake babies</u></font></p>
<p><font size="4">可以把 promoted for breastfeeding quake babies 理解成过去分词短语做后置定语，修饰 China cop；也可理解成省略了系动词be。即：China cop <strong>is</strong> promoted for breastfeeding quake babies,而实际上原本正是这样的一个完整的句子。但是在标题中， 多会省略一部分。注意这里用了<strong>is</strong>，一般现在时常用于新闻标题中（尽管事件是过去发生的）。又如本文下面一段的标题：<span style="FONT-SIZE: 18pt; COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-language: ZH-CN"><font size="4">Space shuttle Discovery <strong>blasts off</strong></font><strong> 。</strong></span>在电影解说、剧情场景描述、图片说明等方面也常见到用一般现在时的情况。只要去英语博客里看看就很清楚了！今天先不谈这个问题。</font></p>
<p><font size="4">for在这里表示原因， 此用法很常见。如：Thank you for your advice; Excuse me for being late; He was praised for helping others, 等等。</font></p>
<p><font size="4">breastfeeding quake babies 是动名词短语，一般认为是做介词for的宾语，而babies 做<font size="4">breastfeeding 宾语；</font></font></p>
<p><font size="4">动名词（<font size="4">Gerunds）</font>和现在分词（Present Participles）都是动词的ing形式， 即 doing。问题在于动名词和现在分词的划分或区别，语法界有一定争议，都说得通。会用才是主要的。</font></p>
<p><font size="4">记住最关键特性：</font></p>
<p><font size="4">动名词，顾名思义，兼有名词和动词的特性；现在分词兼有形容词和动词的特性，过去分词(Past Participles)也如此，</font><font size="4">即：</font></p>
<p><font size="4">Gerunds differ from participles in one fundamental respect: Gerunds are verb forms used as nouns; Participles are verb forms used as adjective.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">The gerund is both verb and noun; The participle is both verb and adjective.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">（三）现在开始研究句中的词汇（注意加重的单词）。词汇学习尤其是动词是我系列文章里要谈的重点。我要特别强调必须在语言环境中学习词汇及其他。将引用大量的实例来说明为什么词汇学习绝不能孤立于语言环境之外。仅参考词典里的几个例句是绝对不够的，我们要从一篇篇文章下手来系统、细致地学习词汇。学习时态、语态也如此，且必然要涉及到词汇。这是大环境的问题。大家看到，仅仅是第一段里，我就划出了不少重点词汇。其实每个词都是可以说上几大篇的。我们来看看这些词汇到底都有哪些名堂！</font></p>
<p><font size="4">（1）先翻成中文（仅供参考以方便讲解；待斟酌）</font></p>
<p><font size="4"><span>直译：在上月地震期间给数名孤儿哺乳的中国女警察获得了一份更好的工作，从而引发了网上抗议：<span>擢升应按照功绩而不是只看所做的好事。</span></span></font></p>
<p><font size="4"><span><span>改译：一位中国女警察在上月地震期间给数名孤儿哺乳而获得了提拔，引发了网上抗议：应该按照功绩提拔而非只看善行（或：不应只看善行而要以功绩为标准<span>）。</span></span></span></font></p>
<p><font size="4"><span><span><span>这里，breastfeed没有译为&ldquo;喂奶&rdquo;，因为用奶瓶喂奶也是喂奶，而该英文词的含义是哺乳；译成&ldquo;数名孤儿&rdquo;是因为babies这个词是个复数形式。这个事迹众人皆知，但翻译是假定给不知情的人看的。在上下文通晓的情况下， 可省略&ldquo;数名&rdquo;；翻译不是本篇要谈的。</span></span></span></font></p>

<p><font size="4">野老虎在海外留学、工作和生活的英语环境里学习和使用英语累积已有十八年，加上在国内学习和使用英语的时间，可谓年头不少了。在国内的时候，老师、同学和同事甚至老外都夸我&ldquo;英语好&rdquo;，那时候的我也很洋洋得意，很狂。用我现在的眼光来看待过去，真可谓&ldquo;不知天高地厚&rdquo;！现在的感受是什么呢？现在的英语水平如何？比过去当然提高了很多，但还差得很远！</font><font size="4">现在回过头来再谈英语学习，体会比二十多年前更加深刻。英语究竟该怎样学才有效、才能提高得快？ 我的两个英语博客（野老虎的洋妹妹博客和野老虎文学英语博客）就是示范，只是许多博友还未领悟其中的奥妙罢了。有些博友建议提供中文注释和讲解，以帮助大学生们学习英语，我没有采纳，因为我是有意为之的，本文将做解释。这两个博客的起点都比较高，它们适合于大学或大学以上英语水平的读者，但也适合于一些英语基础较好的高中生。其实有的文章并不是很难。我本不想再谈英语学习的问题，因为付诸于行动比空谈英语学习更重要！而我观察到的情况让我很失望：在博客里迷恋于&ldquo;交友&rdquo;的多，走马观花的多；有的只是好奇；有的对属于他人隐私的问题感兴趣（这样的留言和小纸条我一律不回！）；有的即使访问了英语博客也未见其驻足阅读（从文章的点击情况即可看得出来）。面对这样的博友，还有必要分享自己学习英语的体会和经验吗？事实上，来访博客次数较多的，恰恰是那些英语水平本身就很好的博友。这很说明问题：他们是懂得英语博客的利用价值的人；他们明白英语学到一定程度后该怎么办；他们知道该如何取材并用之于英语教学。在这些博友中，毕竟还有忠于教师职业、热爱学生、热爱英语教学工作的好老师，他们见到好的文章时总想着如何用之于教学，学生们有这样的好老师很幸运！也有一些坚持学习英语的博友们，还有我在国内外的亲戚和好友们，为了他们，我愿意再次谈一谈英语学习的问题。文中将介绍野老虎自己的一些学习英语的经验。以下是可能涉及到的内容的提纲，具体成文后顺序和内容会有调整。本文涉及面较广，我今后不打算再写了，故这次多谈些（因为我知道一些博友读完后就不再读第二遍了，结果错过了后补充的内容），以后可能就在此文上补充了。时间和精力有限，将分次陆续写完。顺便提一下，我对自己的所有博客均不做推广，故很少访问其他博友，因为我有很多事情要做。时间对我来说是宝贵的！但是，只要博友们有需要我帮助的，我定会尽力而为，再忙也会抽出时间来答复的，早晚而已。</font></p>

<p><font size="4">A Chinese policewoman who breastfed babies orphaned during last month's earthquake has been given a better job, prompting online protests that promotions should be awarded on merit, not merely for good deeds.</font></p></div>
<p><font size="4">Jiang Xiaojuan, 30, left her own baby with her parents and took part in the disaster relief work, breastfeeding nine babies, earning her the nickname of &quot;the police mum&quot; in the press.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">She has since been awarded titles of &quot;hero and model police officer&quot; and &quot;excellent member of the Communist Party&quot;, was appointed to the Communist Party of China Committee of the Jiangyou Public Security Bureau and became the bureau's vice commissar, Xinhua news agency said on Saturday.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">Jiangyou, population 850,000, is a city near the epicentre of the May 12 Sichuan quake which killed more than 69,000 people with thousands still missing.</font></p>

<p><font size="4">Most every night, I stay up late-late, long after everyone else is sleeping. I fly over the internet, looking, looking, trying to find something beautiful or restorative to share with you here at TMV, so either you go to sleep with a beautiful idea or image, or wake up with one.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">Tonight, finding something beautiful in this wide and groaning world, was easy. Because there is Jiang Xiaojuan, a young provincial policewoman. </font></p>
<p><font size="4">Jiang is 29 years old and is the young mother of a little baby herself. Her child is under six months old, and is still being breastfed. </font></p>
<p><font size="4">When the earthquake that killed over 50,000 people in China occurred, Jiang&rsquo;s town was devastated. She put on her uniform and went out looking to help. She first found one weeping baby, and then another young infant&hellip; and took them to her breast. </font></p>
<p><font size="4">She now is nursing five orphan infants whose mothers died in the earthquake. And she is nursing four other newborns whose mothers are homeless and traumatized&hellip; when a nursing mother is severely shocked, her milk flow, you might say, is shocked too and can stop flowing.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">As a mother who nursed til her offspring was practically old enough to go to school, and as the mother of a grown daughter who while nursing her own child also gave her nourishing milk to my ailing elderly father (expressed, not nursed)&hellip; I feel certain we stand with many mothers worldwide who salute Jiang Xiaojuan profoundly.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">It&rsquo;s a mystery women don&rsquo;t often speak of publicly, what it&rsquo;s like to nourish another human being&hellip; or many&hellip; from one&rsquo;s own blood and bones. It is, one of the greatest honors in the world. </font></p>
<p><font size="4">I think, despite the restrictive and suspicious regime of China, it&rsquo;s people like Jiang who really represent the true spirit of modern China, the compassionate soul. </font></p>
<p><font size="4">Tonight, it was easy to find a beautiful story to tell you. I would that it were as easy on all other nights too. </font></p>

<p><font size="4">Jiang Xiaojuan was&nbsp;one of thousands of police-officers attending to&nbsp;earthquake relief in China's Sichuan Province.&nbsp; But Jiang's unique contribution to the relief effort set&nbsp;her apart from the rest&nbsp;her peers- she breastfed nine babies newly orphaned by the earthquake.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">Normally, this type of story would be nothing more than a unique human interest story, but Jiang's new promotion to vice commissar of police in Jiangyou City has&nbsp;created quite a stir.&nbsp; An editorial in the <b><a href="http://opinion.people.com.cn/GB/7388199.html">People's Daily</a></b> asks the question, of whether or not a breastfeeding mother could be a good political commissar.&nbsp; According to the editorial, she was just a humble policewoman who happened&nbsp;to offer a unique service to the relief efforts.&nbsp; She may not be as qualified for the job as other more senior officers.&nbsp;</font></p>
<p><font size="4">Others disagree, and another editorial from <b><a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/comments/2008-06/17/content_8379865.htm">Xinhua News</a></b> says that the promotion was completely justified.&nbsp; They argue that she was promoted because of her kind heart, police qualifications, and &quot;low-profile &quot;celebrity&quot;&quot;.&nbsp;&nbsp;According to the editorial, any moral, competent person can become a good leader.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">But Jiang Xiaojuan&nbsp;isn't the only&nbsp;one whose job has been subject to&nbsp;the earthquake spotlight.&nbsp; While her&nbsp;actions resulted in&nbsp;a promotion, Fan Meizhong (dubbed &quot;Runner Fan&quot; in the blogosphere), a teacher who ran out of&nbsp;his classroom when the earthquake hit, <b><a href="http://www.chinadaily.net/china/2008-06/16/content_6765076.htm">has been fired.</a></b>&nbsp; <b><a href="http://www.danwei.org/scholarship_and_education/fan_meizhong.php">Danwei.org</a></b> has an interesting&nbsp;analysis on the situation, posing the question of whether self-preservation is a fireable offense.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">While no student in Fan's school died during the quake, the surviving ones said he was a good teacher who encouraged independent thinking.&nbsp; His principal said Fan was fired not for his instincts, but his &quot;inappropriate&quot; statements, which received considerable discussion and debate online.&nbsp;</font></p>
<p><font size="4">Chances are that Fan wasn't the only teacher who cared more about his own life than the lives of his students, but he was the only teacher who thought that sharing his experiences on Tianya.com was a good idea.&nbsp; <b><a href="http://www.chinadaily.net/china/2008-06/16/content_6765076.htm">He said</a></b>, &quot;I would only give up my life for my daughter.&nbsp; I would not do it for other people, even my&nbsp;mother.&quot;&nbsp; While these&nbsp;thoughts don't really reflect looking out for&nbsp;&quot;the greater good,&quot;&nbsp;he would hardly be alone in his instinct of self-preservation. <br /><br />Without the earthquake, Fan and Jiang would probably be on the traditional job trajectories, and definitely wouldn't be web celebrities.&nbsp; But their stories are a far more striking example of social values than typical career tracks.<br /><br />Amidst the greatly evolving Chinese landscape, basic mores, like valuing the interests of the greater good over self-preservation, continue to shape the culture.&nbsp; At the same time, these sentiments aren't completely unchallenged, and both Jiang's promotion and Fan's firing have resulted in intense online debate.<br /><br />Not even the &quot;official&quot; state-run news agencies agree on Jiang's promotion, though you could either argue that her strong character is beneficial to the greater good, or that her lack of experience could be problematic for those under her authority. <br /><br />We'll probably never know how successful Jiang will be in her new job, or whether Fan receives a teaching job at another school, since their 15 minutes of fame are already fading.&nbsp; On the other hand, the ongoing earthquake coverage will continue to give the global public a unique glimpse into China's social values.</font></p>

<p align="left"><font size="4">Fan Meizhong, a Chinese language teacher at a private high school in Dujiangyan city, one of the worst-hit areas, got a nickname &quot;running Fan&quot; from Netizens as he left behind all his students and escaped the classroom first during the 8-magnitude quake.<br /><br />&quot;We learnt from the school that he was dismissed,&quot; said Wang Xuming, Education Ministry spokesman said on Monday. &quot;But it was the decision made by the school itself.&quot;<br /><br />He denied media reports that the ministry had sent a circular to the local education authority to disqualify Fan as a teacher and fire him.<br /><br />Ten days after the quake, Fan wrote a post at www.tianyaclub.com, China's hottest online community, recalling his experience in the quake and claiming that he would not regret doing so.<br /><br />&quot;At such a life-and-death moment, I would only give up my life for my daughter. Students will look down upon him,&quot; said Guo Xiao, one of Fan's colleagues.<br /><br />Fan had been suspended from school since the event broke out.<br /><br />But there are people standing on his side. &quot;I disagree with what Fan did and said. But he was straightforward and just expressed what he really thought,&quot; said Luxixi228 in her blog.<br /><br />Some others also stood out against the criticism, saying that they were too judgmental and did not tolerate differences.<br /><br />Fan was not the only one in the center of controversy initiated by netizens.<br /><br />Hollywood actress Sharon Stone triggered rage among Chinese online communities for her remark at the Cannes Film Festival that the May 12 earthquake might have been the result of bad &quot;karma&quot; since Chinese are &quot;not nice&quot; and &quot;bad things&quot; happen to them.<br /><br />Chinese real estate tycoon Wang Shi was also criticized for his statement that donations should be sustainable instead of a burden to enterprises and his company suggested that each common employee donate ten yuan ($1.5) once.<br /><br />Both of them made apologies to the public.</font></p>

<p><font size="4">On 12 May, Fan Meizhong was teaching literature to a class of high school students when the earthquake hit. He shouted, &quot;Earthquake!&quot; and then ran out of the classroom, down the stairs, and out onto the field, leaving his students behind.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">Fan was pilloried online. Netizens called him &quot;the most shameless teacher ever,&quot; partly for his cowardly abandonment of his students, but also for a post about the incident he put up on the Tianya BBS, which many critics saw as a pitiful attempt to justify a warped sense of morality. Fan confessed that his instinct for self-preservation meant that his daughter was the only person he'd ever think of sacrificing himself for &mdash; he'd even have left his mother behind.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">Netizens called him &quot;Runner Fan&quot; (范跑跑), a nickname that even his boss used when talking to the media. Qing Guangya, principal of the privately-run Guangya School in Dujiangyan, is facing pressure to fire Fan for being a poor model for the students. Here is what he told the <i>Yangtse <span title="Corrected from 'Evening News'">Evening Post</span></i>:</font></p>

<p><font size="4">&quot;In the earthquake, our school's classrooms were not harmed at all, and none of the 800-plus students and faculty was injured. But Fan Meizhong, mocked online as 'Runner Fan,' was an exception. His emotional injuries were self-inflicted.&quot;</font></p>
<p><font size="4">&quot;I don't know why he wrote those words on his blog that so enraged everyone. Actually, at the time he didn't say anything like that. When the earthquake hit, 'Runner Fan' just shouted 'Earthquake!' and was the first one out of the classroom and onto the field.&quot; Qing Guangya recalled that he staggered out of his office later, and after he reached the field, he discovered that students and teachers from every class were crouching on the ground. So he said, &quot;Do a head-count.&quot; He remembers quite clearly that &quot;Runner Fan&quot; carefully counted the students who had been mocking him just then. After determining that there were no deaths or injuries, Qing organized the students and teachers to divert their attention and dispel their anxiety. The younger grades sang songs; classes that had been going on continued with review, reading, memorization, and discussions; upper levels continued their activities. During all of this, &quot;Runner Fan&quot; was just as cooperative.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">This reporter noticed that Qing was obviously conflicted when discussing &quot;Runner Fan.&quot; &quot;Giving a shout and then running off when the earthquake hit: I think that's just a normal human reaction. But he really shouldn't have said those things afterward. The stuff he said was really out of line!&quot;</font></p></blockquote>
<p><font size="4">The newspaper quotes a &quot;knowledgeable source&quot; who said that &quot;everyone, including all levels of the state education administration, have been talking to Qing Guangya hoping that he will fire Fan Meizhong. On one occasion, Qing said candidly that 'Runner Fan' was mistaken in what he said, but his actions were not wrong...&quot; </font></p>

<p><font size="4">On 31 May, <i>Changjiang Times</i> printed an interview with Fan himself, in which he spoke about his actions and the online response:</font></p>

<p><font size="4"><b>Changjiang Times</b>: Why did you post that article on the Internet?<br /><b>Fan Meizhong</b>: I graduated from the history department of Peking University. After this major historic event, I wanted to record something in words, so I wrote that article online.</font></p>
<p><font size="4"><b>CT</b>: Netizens say that it's OK that you ran, but you shouldn't be so boastful about it. What do you think about that?<br /><b>Fan</b>: If I wasn't wrong to run, then what's the problem with writing about it? True, a teacher has a responsibility and duty to educate students, but the Education Law does not have any regulations saying that during an earthquake a teacher must save the students. My running off alone didn't violate national law. It only challenged the traditional ideas of education and morality that many people hold. They believe that a teacher ought to be a model of virtue for others, and in the face of disaster, students are the weaker group so a teacher should help them up. </font></p>
<p><font size="4">But the fact is that at the instant of the earthquake, a teacher is weak, too. I had no experience; neither the state nor the school taught me live-saving or rescue techniques. I had no ability to save the entire class. If every teacher was like Mr. Tan [Tan Qianqiu, who used his body to shield four students from a collapsing roof], who gave his life for his students, then we'd have no more heroes. I admire heroes like Mr. Tan, but I can't do that myself. I love my life more.</font></p>
<p><font size="4"><b>CT</b>: Netizens say that it's OK that you ran, but they ask why you didn't call to the students to run, too?<br /><b>Fan</b>: (<i>silent for a moment</i>) I admit that I'm afraid of death. My life is more important to me than those of others. I was really scared right then, and my instinctive response was to run outside. I thought that if I yelled, &quot;Earthquake!&quot; then the students would run after me. When I got to the field, lots of students had run outside, but I didn't imagine that no one from my class would run.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">On this point, my wife also says that I performed badly. The past few days I've been thinking things over &mdash; why didn't I shout to the students to follow me? If you must say that I'm wrong, then it's because I ran without telling the students to come, too.</font></p>
<p><font size="4"><b>CT</b>: Do you feel guilty?<br /><b>Fan</b>: I didn't intentionally do anything wrong, so why should I feel guilty? The earthquake happened and killed all those people, so I'm saddened, but I didn't create the earthquake, so there's no reason for me to feel guilty. And when I returned to the classroom afterward, the students were perfectly fine.</font></p>
<p><font size="4"><b>CT</b>: What was the class like then? What did you say to your students?<br /><b>Fan</b>: There were only two students under their desks. The rest were crouched on the floor with a look of panic on their faces.</font></p>
<p><font size="4"><b>CT</b>: Why did you have to explain &quot;I'd only save my daughter, not my mother&quot; in your article? Netizens think that you are an unfilial son.<br /><b>Fan</b>: Feelings-wise, it's hard to say whether my daughter or my mother is more important. But my daughter is only one year old, so saving her would have more chance of success. I brought up this example to explain the importance of one's own life in the face of a life-or-death situation, not to say that I don't love my mother. I know that saying this challenges China's traditional concept of morality; I've broken a taboo and brought the criticism on myself. But I anticipated it.</font></p>
<p><font size="4"><b>CT</b>: What would you like to say to the netizens who've attacked you?<br /><b>Fan</b>: I'd like to say that many netizens don't really understand me. Their demands on me come out of their own personal morality; they hope that other people will do better, little realizing that in the same situation, they'd be exactly like me.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">They're not considering institutional and technological factors. If all the buildings were built to strict quality standards, would we have lost so many people? If the state and the school frequently instructed students in how to escape an earthquake, then they'd naturally run when an earthquake hit, and there'd be no need for me to shout.</font></p>
<p><font size="4">Netizens can attack me and argue with me, but they'd do better to think about institutional and technological factors. If another earthquake comes, whether our houses are safe will determine whether we'll escape safely.</font></p></blockquote>
<p><font size="4">Fan appeals to the Education Law to deny any wrongdoing. In response, commentators have suggested that Fan's actions did indeed violate that law. Here's an excerpt from a Rednet post by Li Zhenzhong, titled &quot;The 'Running teacher' was also 'tofu dregs' in the face of disaster&quot;:</font></p>

<p><font size="4">The Compulsory Education Law does stipulate that &quot;a teacher should be a model of virtue for others and should be devoted to the education of the people.&quot; To be a &quot;model of virtue,&quot; to &quot;undertake the duty stipulated in the law,&quot; to be &quot;devoted to the education of the people&quot;: looking at the Compulsory Education Law, being concerned solely for one's own life and leaving students behind while fleeing violates the spirit of the law.</font></p></blockquote>
<p><font size="4">The Compulsory Education Law was revised in 2006; the 1986 version only commanded teachers to &quot;show concern for their students and be devoted to their duties.&quot; But it's likely that the netizens who are attacking Runner Fan's morals would argue that simply shouting &quot;Earthquake!&quot; and then running outside doesn't really show concern for the students, either.</font></p>
