The route of the torch relay of 2008 Beijing Olympics will be the longest in history.
The relay, with over 20,000 torchbearers participating will travel 13,700 kilometers around the world.
After Monday's flame-lighting ceremony in Athens, the flame will tour around Greece, the home of the ancient Olympics, for six days.
The first torchbearer will be Greek Olympic Taekwondo silver medalist, Alexandros Nikolaidis.
He will then hand over the flame to China's swimming Olympic Champion, Luo Xuejuan.
On March 30th, the transport of the torch will reach Panathenian Stadium, where the torch will be placed in the waiting hands of the BOCOG.
After a reception in Beijing one day later the Olympic flame will begin its global tour of 135 cities on April 1st.
The capital of Kazakstan, Alma-Ata, will be the first leg of the global torch relay.
An Alma-Ata citizen said, "I know that Beijing will hold the Olympic Games this summer and the Olympic flame will come here soon for relay. This is an honor for Kazakstan. We feel very happy. "
Qu Yingpu, spokesperson of Torch Relay Department, BOCOG, said, "The torch relay route will mainly cover Asia, especially those countries which are located along the ancient Silk Road. We hope the flame will retrace that epic journey to promote exchanges."
On May 4th, the Olympic flame will begin its journey around China.
The torch bearers in China will pass through 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions by air, railway and road.
And the flame will finally arrive at the National Stadium in Beijing on Aug 8th, 2008 for the opening ceremony.
The highlight of the relay will be an attempt to take the Olympic flame to the world's highest mountain peak.
At an altitude of 8,844 meters-- Mount Qomolangma is the highest summit in the world.
Chinese climbers will try to take it to the top of Mount Qomolanga. The attempt will take place in May whenever the weather conditions are most suitable.
After the flame arrives in Beijing at the end of March, a second torch will be lit and taken to Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

The torch lighting ceremony took place Monday for this year's Beijing Olympics. Ancient Olympia played host to an audience of hundreds along with journalists from all over the world, which also kicked off what will be the longest torch relay in Olympic history.

The Olympic flame lighting ceremony was held in the birthplace of the ancient Olympics on Monday. It is also the first time the flame will end its epic journey at the Games in China.
Twenty priestesses accompanied High Priestess Maria Nafpliotou, who held the torch to the polished steel mirror.
Monday's bright sunshine in Athens swept people's worries of cloudy weather, ensuring the traditional lighting by solar cauldron was a success.
Plenty of International VIPs attended the sacred ceremony.
IOC President Jacques Rogge explained the significance of the special moment.
IOC President Jacques Rogge said, "I express here the hope that the symbol of the torch and that the right circumstances can be created, wherever the torch travels, for it to resonate."
BOCOG President Liu Qi expressed confidence that China will hold a successful Olympics.
BOCOG president Liu Qi said, "Under the light of the Olympic flame, and with the joint efforts of the people of China, Greece and the rest of the world, Beijing will host a high-level Olympic Games with distinguishing features."
After the flame-lighting ceremony, the torch was finally passed to the first torchbearer, Greek Olympic Taekwonndo silver medalist, Alexandros Nikolaidis.
He then handed over the torch to China's swimming Olympic champion, Luo Xuejuan.
As the first Chinese torchbearer for the Beijing Games, the Olympic champion says she feels very proud.
2nd torchbearer Luo Xuejuan said, "When I took over the torch from the first torchbearer, my biggest feeling is that this is also a culture exchange between Greece and China. We will deliver the Olympic flame to all over the world."
More than 600 other runners will carry the torch before it's handed over to the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games on March the 30th.

A sacred flame was lit from the rays of the Sun at Olympia, and stayed lit until the Games were completed. According to tradition the Olympic Flame represents the "endeavor for protection and struggle for victory". In modern-day Olympic history the Olympic flame was first lit during the 1936 Berlin Games. Since then, the flame has come to symbolize "the light of spirit, knowledge, and life". And the tradition has continued for a total of 16 Olympic Summer Games.
Throughout Olympic history the flame has been lit at the ancient Olympic Stadium in Olympia, and then transported to the host city where the last runner uses it to light the large Olympic cauldron. The Olympic torch relay symbolizes the passing of Olympic traditions from one generation to the next.

Germany's RTL News Television has expressed regret over a serious error it made in its coverage of recent riots in Lhasa, the capital city of China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
The television station admits on its website that it used an erroneous picture in a misleading context. The picture actually shows baton-wielding Nepalese police during clashes with protesters in Kathmandu. But in the television news report -- the station claimed the officers were Chinese police.
The main RTL-TV news program has not been the only Western media outlet that has come under criticism for mis-stating facts or falsely reporting information relating to the recent unrest in Lhasa.
In addition, the German Bild newspaper and the Washington Post are among foreign media outlets that have been accused of distorting facts in their coverage of the riots in Lhasa.
